Myth of Arowana

There are 3 types of Asian Arowana - the Red, Gold and Green. For the Chinese, Red is a lucky color, as evidenced by the large amount of red used during Chinese New Year. This makes the Red dragon fish in high demand, and prices for a good quality red can easily fetch around USD5000. Gold is also considered lucky. However, it is surprising that Green variety is not very popular and is consider unlucky, especially in Cantonese speaking countries like Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou. The Cantonese who keep a green Arowana in their home and often gamble are said to "shee tou meen cheang cheang" (lost till their faces turn green).

For the Chinese, the dragon is a symbol of good luck and prosperity. In the eyes of the Chinese, the dragon fish has the appearance and majesty of the Chinese Dragon, especially the scales - it resembles the scales of a Dragon.

When a Chinese businessman purchased one of these fishes, and strike a big fortune, the rumor will spread that he attribute his good luck to owning one of these fish. Soon, demand for this fish rocketed as many others hope that keeping a dragon fish will bring them luck.

General Knowledge about Arowana

Description:

This family of fishes, you can find that the head is bony and the elongate body is covered by heavy and large scales, with a mosaic pattern of canals. The dorsal and the anal fins are long based and have soft rays, the pectoral and ventral fins are tiny. The name 'bony tongues' came from a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth, the 'tongue', equipped with teeth that bite against teeth on the roof of the mouth.

Habitat/Care:

In the wild, the Arowanas prefers to stay near riverbanks with shallow waters, typically as deep as 5 feet, and in shaded areas. In such an environment, insects, which are their main source of food, are plentiful.

Mixing with other fishes:

Arowanas are highly territorial and will not tolerate another Arowana in a small tank. In a large open pond, however, several Arowanas can be kept safely together. Wikipedia recommends that 5-6 Arowanas should be kept together in a tank instead of 2-3 as when in a group, their aggressiveness tends to be subdued.

Do take note that small fish that can fit into their mouth will become their meal.
Medium to Large bottom feeders are good tank mates for the Arowana. The Arowana will leave these bottom feeders alone. Other peaceful large fish can be considered to be placed together with Arowana. Take care not to include fin-nippers with the Arowana.

Diet:

Arowana will generally not eat from the bottom of the tank. They prefer live food or at the very least floating food. At this point, keeping your Arowana with a suitable bottom feeder may be a good idea.

Some foods help to promote a good color in your fish, such as prawns and shrimps contain cerotine which helps bring out the red and gold colors of the Arowana. It is recommended however to maintain a varied and balanced diet for any Arowana.

These foods can include: worms, crickets, grasshoppers, locus, fly, small frogs, small fish (limited quantities) and shrimps with shells. Some Arowana may take floating fish food.

Feeding patterns affect both size and color of your Arowana. Over feeding can make your fish grow faster however this may adversely affect both color and long term health of the fish. Since the size, color and health of your fish are all very important, you are advised not to regularly overfeed any Arowana.

Green Arowana Fish

Green Arowana Green Arowana Fish
(Scleropages formosus)

Description: Green Arowana is a large fresh water fish with numerous primitive features. It is also known as Kelesa. Being a member of the most ancient group of fish, it has been labelled as a relict fish, a living fossil and so forth. Kelesa is characterized by an elongated body, well-developed outsized stout bony scales, large eyes, a bony covering on the head, and deeply oriented pectoral fins. Its body is greatly compressed along the sides, and its belly is keeled. The gape of its mouth is very large and steeply inclined, being directed diagonally upward. The jaws have a row of small pointed teeth. Two small barbels are present on its lower jaw, these are extendable and can touch objects around the fish. Its dorsal fin is located near the tail end. It is smaller than the anal fin which has an origin in front of it. The edges of the dorsal, caudal and anal fins are rounded.

Habit and Habitat: The Kelesa is a predatory fish inhabiting quiet, clear waters, usually singly but sometimes in small schools. It is generally to be found near weeds, rushes and particularly those pockets in the bank where leaves and driftwood collect and where there is often a fallen tree.

Food habit: It feeds chiefly on insects, and large specimens prey upon other fishes. Its diet has also been described to include worms, spiders, small lizards, small snakes and frogs.

Distribution: It was first described by Miller and Schlegel in 1845 from a specimen from River Doeson, Borneo. The first record in Peninsular Malaysia appears to be in 1992. In addition to Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo, it also occurs in Thailand, Cambodia, and Sumatra in rivers and lakes.

Status: A protected species in Sarawak.

Asian Arowana

Asian arowana is the freshwater fish in the genus Scleropages. Some schools differentiate the varieties into multiple species, while others consider the different strains to belong to a single species, Scleropages formosus. They also have a few common names, including Asian bonytongue, dragon fish, and a number of names specific to different species.

Originated from Southeast Asia, Asian arowanas inhabit in blackwater rivers, slow-moving waters flowing through swamps. Adult fish feed on other fish, while juveniles feed on small insects

These popular fish have special cultural significance in places influenced by Chinese culture. The name dragon fish derived from their resemblance to the Eastern dragon. This popularity has had both positive and negative effects on their status as endangered species.
